Biloxi looks for ways to trim stadium cost

The Associated PressJuly 11, 2014

— The city of Biloxi is looking at its options after construction bids for a minor baseball stadium came in too high.

"We have a $5 million gap right now between the amount of money we have available and what the low bid is," said Biloxi spokesman Vincent Creel.

Creel said Thursday that the city has spent $9 million on work already done at the site. He said the low base bid of $32.37 million submitted by W.G. Yates & Sons Construction Co. put the project's cost at more than the $36 million the city has.

The new stadium would be located off U.S. Highway 90 across from Beau Rivage Resort.

"We're going to look at it, see what we can cut and what we can't cut, and we might have to go through the process again," said Mayor A. J. Holloway. "We don't know what to think right now. It's pretty much out of our budget.

"We'll just have to wait for the construction schedule," said Buck Rogers, the Huntsville (Alabama) Stars' general manager, who has been hired in the same capacity at Biloxi.
