Somerset teenager drowns in Lake Cumberland

July 13, 2014

A Somerset teen drowned Sunday after he apparently fell into Lake Cumberland.

The body of Tobias Napier, 18, was recovered at a depth of about 60 feet, said Dan Karriker, assistant chief of the Somerset-Pulaski County Rescue Squad.

Karriker said Napier and some friends were near a boat ramp at the end of Slate Branch Road south of Somerset when the accident happened shortly before noon.

Napier was sitting on a ledge with his feet in the water when he apparently slipped in at a spot where the lake goes almost straight down for 60 feet, Karriker said.

Napier, who was not a strong swimmer, went under quickly. One friend said he tried to help Napier but couldn't, Karriker said.

Friends contacted authorities and members of Napier's family, who came to the scene. It took divers about 2½ hours to find Napier's body and bring it up.
