The couple that brews together wins

Lexington Herald-LeaderJuly 14, 2014

Alltech Lexington brewery supervisor Chris Lady, left, presented Chad Shive with a silver cup commemorating his and his wife's first place win.

Chad and Mary Shive of Lexington took home first place in the 8th Annual Kentucky Ale Pro-Am Brew-Off, hosted by Alltech Lexington Brewing and Distilling Co., for their Robust Porter, described as a dark, light-bodied, chocolatey ale with a dry finish.

The couple began brewing beer together in their garage in 2008 and this marks their first first-place win. The Shives' brew competed against 20 entries from Kentucky and Ohio and received the highest overall score.

Along with the title and a silver cup, Alltech Lexington Brewing and Distilling Co. will make the limited-edition Robust Porter available on draft across the region in late summer while it lasts. The couple will also receive a trip to Denver and a submission to compete in the Great American Beer Festival Oct. 2-4.
