Section of Blue Grass Parkway honors slain officer

July 21, 2014

Bardstown police officer Jason Ellis, 33, was shot multiple times in May 2013 when he got out of his cruiser to pick up tree limbs on an exit ramp of the Blue Grass Parkway.

Signs have been placed along the Blue Grass Parkway in Nelson County designating the section from U.S. 31E to Ky. 55 the Officer Jason Ellis Memorial Highway.

The Transportation Cabinet put up the signs to honor Ellis, a Bardstown police officer who was shot and killed in an ambush on the parkway in May 2013. The action came after the Kentucky General Assembly passed a resolution honoring Ellis and other Kentuckians. State Rep. David Floyd, R-Bardstown, sponsored the resolution in the House, and Sen. Jimmy Higdon, R-Lebanon, who also represents Nelson County, helped get it through the Senate.
