Minor league notes: AJ Reed hits grand slam; Legends shut out Sand Gnats

Former University of Kentucky star AJ Reed's fifth career minor-league home run was also his first grand slam in short-season Class A Tri-City's 16-3 victory against Staten Island. His team has won seven straight games and 11 of their last 12.

Reed, who was the first pick of the second round by the Houston Astros in the MLB Draft in June, was 2-for-2 with three walks and three runs scored for the ValleyCats.

He's batting .306 with five home runs, 22 walks and 30 RBI in 34 games. Reed also has a .423 on-base percentage.

J.T. Riddle (Western Hills, UK) singled in the top of the ninth inning to extend his hitting streak to 10 games for Class A Greensboro. The Grasshoppers rallied during the inning to tied the game at 7-all before Augusta scored in the bottom half to win 8-7.

Riddle is 20-for-43 (.465) during his hitting streak. Overall, he's batting .291 with eight home runs and 43 RBI for the Miami Marlins affiliate.

Pedro Fernandez (1-6) pitched six shutout innings and Matt Tenuta added three more in the Class A Lexington Legends' 1-0 victory against visiting Savannah.

Fernandez gave up one hit and two walks with four strikeouts.

Frank Schwindel doubled in the only run of the game in the sixth inning.
