Not-guilty plea in Feb. 9 killing

A Lexington man pleaded not guilty Monday to a charge stemming from a killing this year.

Lamarius Gates, 20, pleaded not guilty during arraignment on a charge of complicity to commit murder in connection with the shooting death of Vincenzo Happy on Feb. 9. Happy, 23, died at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital after he was shot while sitting in his car on Lima Drive.

According to court documents, Gates "was an active participant in the shooting" that resulted in the death of Happy. Jayronn Montero Nickerson has been indicted on murder charges in the death of Happy.

Gates was being held in the Fayette County Detention Center without bail. He's due back in court Friday. Nickerson, 22, was being held the jail on $505,000 bond.
