GLEN COVE, N.Y. — Bethany Wu shot a 2-under 68 on Tuesday in the U.S. Women's Amateur to top the 64 match-play qualifiers.

The 17-year-old Wu, from Diamond Bar, Calif., finished stroke play at 3-under 137 at Nassau Country Club. Australia's Su-Hyun Oh, the first-round leader, was a shot back along with Andrea Lee of Hermosa Beach, Calif. Oh had a 72, and Lee shot 69.

Defending champion Emma Talley, the 20-year-old University of Alabama player and former Caldwell County star, tied for 46th at 6 over. She followed her opening 76 with a 70.

Talley won three state championships while at Caldwell County. She also made the cut earlier this year at the U.S. Women's Open and Women's British Open championships.

"I knew that today was a big day," said Talley, who made the winning putt for United States in June in the Curtis Cup. "I got 1 over at one point, and I knew I just needed to stick with my game."

Former University of Kentucky star Liz Breed also advanced. She shot a 70 after an opening-round 75. Breed wrapped up her UK career earlier this year.

Three Kentuckians missed the cut: Ellen Kehoe, who will be a senior this fall at Taylor County, followed up a 73 with an 82.

Ale Walker, a former Paintsville standout who will be a sophomore at Kentucky, shot an 82 Tuesday after a 76 on Monday.

Hebron's Martha Leach, who competed in her first U.S. Women's Amateur as a 16-year-old in 1978, turned in a 73 after posting an 85 in her opening round.
