Minor league notes: Shepherd earns win in relief; Kuhn hits HR; Kay batting .430

Chandler Shepherd (Lawrence Co., UK) pitched three shutout innings of relief, giving up one hit and striking out two, to earn the victory in short-season Class A Lowell’s 3-2 defeat of State College on Thursday.

Shepherd, a Boston Red Sox prospect, improved to 3-2 with a 4.03 ERA in 12 appearances for the Spinners. He has 23 strikeouts and six walks in 22 1/3 innings.

Max Kuhn (UK) hit his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot, in short-season Class A Vermont’s 9-1 win at Aberdeen.

Kuhn is batting .255 with 12 RBI for the Oakland A’s affiliate.

Grant Kay (U of L) continued his stellar start to his minor league career, going 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI in short-season Class A Hudson Valley’s 5-2 win against Williamsport.

Through 21 games, Kay’s batting average is still well above .400. He’s 34-for-79 (.430) with two home runs, 12 doubles and 13 RBI for the Tampa Bay Rays farm club.

Luke Maile (Covington Catholic, UK) hit an RBI double in Double-A Montgomery’s 8-2 loss to Chattanooga.

Maile is batting .261 with five home runs and 27 RBI in 79 games for the Tampa Bay affiliate.

Josh Lueke (Scott, NKU) earned his eighth save in Triple-A Durham’s 1-0 win at Buffalo.

The Rays minor leaguer pitched one inning and gave up one hit with one strikeout. He has a 3.28 ERA.
