A Richmond man was charged with attempted rape after police say he broke into a woman's home and tried to assault her.

Richmond police said in a news release that Felipe Ramirez, 27, came into the woman's residence while she was sleeping.

The woman who was not named, told police that she was awakened Friday morning by the man on top of her. She fought back, and a neighbor and friend who heard the commotion came to help, police said.

Ramirez fled with the woman's cell phone and identification.

The woman suffered minor injuries, police said.

Officers responded at 5:31 a.m. and executed a search warrant at Ramirez's residence soon after, according to the release.

Ramirez was arrested and charged with first-degree burglary, first-degree attempted rape, fourth-degree assault, tampering with physical evidence and theft by unlawful taking under $500.

He was taken to the Madison County Detention Center.

Police did not provide the location of the assault.
