Kristoffer Tollefsen and Ryan Creel scored second-half goals Sunday as the Kentucky men blanked Belmont 2-0 at the new Wendell & Vicki Bell Soccer Complex.
UK evened its record at 1-1, and kept pace after the Wildcat women beat Ohio 3-0 earlier in the day.
"It feels really, really good," Coach Johan Cedergren said. "Like I said earlier today, to have this wonderful facility that we have and all the stuff that's in it, for us it puts a little pressure. You don't want to be the ugly stepchild. The women's program is doing fantastic, and I think that we have a lot of very good players and we have a lot of talent. We're a little young still, so we're finding out exactly what's needed to win games in college soccer. But we want to win, and with the guys that we have we can get a fair amount of wins this year.
"With all the people here on opening weekend, you want to put on a good show. And I thought that the guys were really, really good today. They were brave on the ball. And sometimes when you're young, you don't want to make any mistakes, you just pass it on. But I thought there were several times today when some of the younger guys, they did really, really well."
A scoreless first half saw UK outshoot the Bruins 13-1, including 3-0 in shots on goal.
About 10 minutes into the second half, Tollefsen and Hampus Agerstrom each put shots on for the Wildcats, but Belmont goalie Grayson Rector was up to the task.
Tollefsen broke the ice at 59:30.
"It was a corner kick (by Charlie Reymann) and it just kind of took a deflection and got up in the air outside 18 yards, and I kind of just took a chance and hit it," Tollefsen said. "Then it deflected off a (defensive) guy and went through the keeper's legs, but a goal is a goal and I felt like that was just what we needed at the time.
"We were pushing the entire game and we deserved that goal. It was just an unbelievable feeling to get my first goal and also for the team to get their first goal of the year."
Creel made it 2-0 at 72:35, converting a sharp-angle shot just inside the far post.
"I saw Charlie Reymann come popping through the left side, as he always likes to get forward out of the left half spot," Creel said, "and ... I (was) in good position to put it away. It felt really good, first home game of the season, and coach said we've got to ring that bell today. I don't know if it rang, but it was good to get it either way."
A bell rests just to the side of the new grandstands.
UK's back line, led by Reymann, Matt Quick, Kaelon Fox and Jordan Wilson, did the rest.
"That back four was very solid today," Cedergren said.
The Cats' keeper, Callum Irving, had to make only two saves. Overall, UK outshot the Bruins 24-4.
