UK doing away with paper in registration, class listings

Starting in January, registering for classes at the University of Kentucky will become a paperless chase. UK announced Wednesday that it is virtually doing away with the 81,000 copies of the traditional schedule book, beginning with the spring 2009 semester.

The move is expected to have environmental and economic benefits and to save an estimated $80,000 a year.

The savings is especially important in light of higher education budget cuts, Don Witt, the assistant provost for enrollment management, said in a release.

Witt also said that the printed schedule "was out of date the moment it was printed," but the online version can be repeatedly changed.

Also going paperless with the 2008-09 school year: the 75,000 copies of the Undergraduate Record, which lists all classes and requirements.

Students will find the information through their MyUK accounts. The publications will be available to everyone at http://www.uky.edu/Registrar.
