WEST VIRGINIA'S HUGGINS HOSPITALIZED

Junior college point guard Bobby Maze has signed a letter of intent to play at Tennessee.

UT was looking for immediate help at the position after announcing May 2 that Ramar Smith would not return to play for the Vols.

Maze transferred from Oklahoma last year to Hutchinson Community College in Kansas, where he averaged 20.7 points, 6.7 assists and 4.5 rebounds.

Maze said he has some classwork to complete to gain full eligibility.

He visited Cincinnati last weekend and was scheduled to visit Kentucky this weekend. But he said the support for UT basketball as well as a working relationship between his community college coach and Vols assistant Steve Forbes helped make up his mind.

"There's no need for me to go visit Kentucky," Maze said. "There's not a better situation than this."

Huggins hurt in fall

West Virginia officials say men's coach Bob Huggins was taken to a hospital in Charlotte, N.C., for precautionary reasons after tripping on an airport tarmac and hitting his head on the pavement.

Athletic Director Ed Pastilong said Huggins had a bump on his head and never lost consciousness.

After Huggins got off the plane, he was checking his cell-phone messages when he tripped over a cone on the tarmac and hit his head.

LSU coach mystified

Louisiana State Coach Trent Johnson said he was caught off guard when he learned prized recruit J'Mison Morgan wanted to be released from his commitment to the Tigers so he could instead attempt to play for UCLA.

Morgan was recruited by former LSU coach John Brady and assistant Butch Pierre, who later served as interim coach late last season before Johnson was given the job full-time.

The 6-foot-10 Morgan, a star at South Oak Cliff High School in Dallas, had committed to LSU before the regime change.

Johnson did pay Morgan a visit at Oak Cliff and his home two weeks ago, returning to Baton Rouge with the impression that Morgan still intended to play for the Tigers.

Johnson said he spoke to Morgan's mother, Bianca, on Wednesday, and she had not changed her mind since making published comments that LSU was not the right place for her son. She suggested Johnson hadn't shown enough interest in her son.

Johnson said he made repeated attempts since April 22 to contact Morgan and his mother, but calls were not returned.
