High school track: Henry Clay boys run away with it
By Travis Waldron
Henry Clay won five of the first seven events at the Central Kentucky Conference Meet on Friday night and never looked back, winning dashes, relays and field events en route to an easy victory in the boys' meet. The Blue Devils won seven events and had top four finishers in ten others.
Danville coasted to the win on the girls' side by dominating the track events.
On a Henry Clay team anchored by experience, it was an inexperienced runner that stole the show. Eighth-grader Brandon Nichols won the 400-meter dash and was a part of three relay teams -- the 4x100, 4x200 and the 4x400 -- that finished first.
"He's still got some room to grow," Henry Clay Coach Demetrius Gay said, "But the more practice I get with him, the better he's going to end up being."
Nichols' performance was no surprise to his teammates.
"That kid is going to be a star," said Michael Gardner, who ran with Nichols in the 4x100 and finished second in the long jump.
Henry Clay's Mike Hamm won the shot put with a throw of 47 feet, 9 inches.
It was a strong showing for a team that heads to its regional Tuesday, Gay said.
"We knew if we came out and ran how we were supposed to, it'd be good for us going into region," Gay said. "It's good competition here, just like our region. It's got a regional feeling to it."
The Blue Devils also found some success on the girls' side, where junior Leigh Allin broke her own Central Kentucky Conference record on the pole vault. Allin cleared 10 feet, 6 inches, six inches above the record she set last year.
The Danville girls won eight events and were led by Candice Taylor, who won the long jump, finished third in the 100 meters and was a part of winning teams in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.
"When you're running against 2A and 3A schools, then you know you can compete with anybody," Danville coach Sadie Gambrel said. "Everybody's beatable."
After winning the 100 meters with a time of 11.36 seconds, Frankfort star and UK football signee E.J. Adams sat out the rest of the meet. Adams re-aggravated a hamstring injury near the end of the race, and with his regional meet Tuesday, decided against running in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes.
