Paducah — Choosing to walk the 6,915 yards at the Country Club of Paducah rather than take a cart, Greensburg's Tyler Sharpe said he feels as though he became familiar with the Robert Trent Jones-designed course quickly.
”I know the course a little better now, and it's a tough course,“ Sharpe said after he finished with the day's best score in the AT&T Men's State Amateur Championship opening round Tuesday.
”I putted real well, and there were a couple of putts that should have fallen but didn't.“
The 24-year-old former Lindsey Wilson golfer managed a 2-under 70 to take the lead in the three-day, 54-hole tournament being held in far Western Kentucky for the first time in 14 years .
His round was one of only three under par on the opening day with Paducah native and Murray State golfer Hunter Ford and Danville's Ben Fuqua, a University of Kentucky player, both a shot back at 71.
Four others matched par with 72s: Chase Carpenter of Salyersville, Jared Wolfe of Louisville, Jordan Blann of Bowling Green and Kyle Leach of Louisville .
Defending champion Philip Hendrickson of Danville was tied for 17th at 74.
The field plays an 18-hole round Wednesday with the top 70 and ties advancing to Thursday's final round.
