The position of the Paul Laurence Dunbar baseball coach is officially listed as open, Fayette County Schools spokeswoman Lisa Deffendall confirmed Tuesday.

Mickey Marshall, who guided Paul Dunbar's baseball team to two state championships in the past five years, was suspended from his coaching duties in May, pending an investigation into allegations of financial misconduct.

Deffendall said the school district's investigation into the allegations continues.

The initial suspension against Marshall, who teaches at Dixie Elementary, was extended an additional 20 working days at the end of the school year, said his attorney Jim Morris. That means the suspension will last into September.

Meanwhile, Marshall is reapplying for the head coaching position, Morris said.

”The school district has intentionally delayed a proper investigation,“ he said. ”They have failed to provide proof that he has done anything wrong.“

Marshall has been an employee of Fayette County schools since 1997. He has been head coach at Dunbar since 2001. He has an overall record of 216-64, including state titles in 2003 and 2007.

Assistants coached the team in Marshall's absence.

All coaches in Fayette County public schools are on one-year contracts that expire each June 30, but Morris said in years past it was a foregone conclusion that Marshall would have the position.
