UK recruit Newton shines in opener

University of Kentucky football commitment Morgan Newton ran for two fourth-quarter touchdowns to lead Carmel (Ind.) to a 28-21 victory over Cathedral (Ind.) in a game nationally televised on ESPN Saturday.

Newton, who announced Thursday that he would play football at UK starting in the 2009 season, completed 16 of 21 passes for 194 yards and rushed 20 times for 89 yards. Newton’s Greyhounds were trailing 21-14 before his two TD runs in the final quarter.

Carmel is ranked No. 1 in Indiana’s Class 5A division and Cathedral is the top-rated team in the state’s Class 4A division. It was the season opener for both teams.

The 6-foot-5, 220-pound quarterback is rated a five-star prospect by Scout.com and picked UK over Florida, Clemson and Illinois.

Newton is part of a 2009 recruiting class that includes four-star quarterback Ryan Mossakowski and is shaping up as one of the Cats’ best ever.

Scout.com ranks Newton as the country’s seventh-best quarterback and Rivals.com has Mossakowski as the nation’s No. 9 pro-style quarterback.
