No matter if it's turf, dirt or synthetic, Sly Storm is happy to keep it short and sweet.
Sly Storm, a $500,000 purchase as a yearling, dug in to hold off a two-horse charge from Taletobetold and Adhsilver in deep stretch to capture the $112,200 Buffalo Trace Franklin County Stakes by a neck on the Keeneland turf before a record crowd of 22,052 Friday.
With Sea the Joy and American County dueling back and forth on the front end, Sly Storm stalked the leaders three-wide under jockey Jamie Theriot before getting her momentum rolling around the final turn.
The daughter of Storm Cat emerged from the pack to take the lead with a furlong to go but appeared in danger when Adhsilver and Taletobetold came flying up on the outside. Sly Storm kept on willingly to the wire, covering the 51/2 furlong distance in 1:03.60 to earn her fifth victory in seven career starts including wins on dirt, turf and synthetic surfaces.
"She's just a sprinter, I don't think the surface means that much to her," winning trainer Tom Proctor said. "They paid enough money for her here, and they've got a nice filly."
Taletobetold and Adhsilver dead-heated for second with Creative Design in fourth.
"Turning for home, we were right behind the winner and just kind of ran out of ground," said Brian Hernandez Jr., jockey for Adhsilver.
