LOUISVILLE — Churchill Downs announced Friday that it will cut overnight purses by 10 percent for the rest of its Fall Meet and reduce purses for two of the meet's major stakes races.
In making the announcement, the track cited "soft business levels stemming from the nation's economic slowdown and the unresolved negotiations with horsemen over distribution of the Churchill Downs simulcast signal to national advance deposit wagering outlets."
The cut in overnight purses will take effect Wednesday. In addition, the Grade II Clark Handicap purse will be reduced by $100,000 to $400,000-added, and the Falls City will be dropped by $50,000 to $150,000-added.
The reduction in stakes purses for the Oct. 26-Nov. 29 meet is the second. A reduction of some stakes purses and the cancellation of two stakes events was announced Aug. 29.
El Caballo held off Jamaludin by three-quarters of a length to score a front-running victory in Friday's $50,000 feature at Churchill.
El Caballo covered the 11⁄16 miles in 1:42.81 and gave jockey Robby Albarado his meet-leading fifth turf victory. El Caballo, who is trained by Ralph Nicks, is a 4-year-old Kentucky-bred son of El Corredor.
