Shenneika Smith tops Cats' wish list

- jsmith3@herald-leader.com

As many as six girls could sign with the Kentucky women by the end of this week, marking the largest class in Coach Matthew Mitchell's short tenure.

It also could be among the top-rated classes in UK women's basketball history.

The biggest get for Mitchell would be Shenneika Smith, ranked No. 7 in the nation by HoopGurlz.com. She would be among the highest ranked players to ever sign with UK.

Smith indicated last week that she had narrowed her choices to UK and Marshall.

Other rated players expected to sign with Kentucky this week include Porsha Postell, a 5-foot-10 combo guard from New York who is rated No. 63 by the All-Star Girls Report and Adia Mathies of Louisville Iroquois, who was ranked No. 65 by HoopGurlz.com.

Mathies is considered one of the frontrunners for Kentucky Miss Basketball.

Other players who have given oral commitments to UK include Brittany Henderson, a 6-1 forward from Pasadena, Calif., as well as Anna Cole, a 6-foot-6 center from Mondovi, Wis. She averaged 12 points, eight rebounds and four blocks as a junior.

Janee Johnson, a 6-foot-1 swing player from Providence Day in North Carolina, has reportedly narrowed her list to Duke and UK and could commit by late this week.
