Legends hire play-by-play man

The Lexington Legends named Keith Elkins as their play-by-play announcer on Thursday as well as director of broadcasting and media relations.

Elkins, a former Lexington television sports reporter and anchor and public relations officer at the University of Kentucky and Transylvania University, will be broadcasting on the largest radio network in minor-league baseball. Legends games are heard on flagship station WLXG in Lexington and 34 affiliates across the state. Elkins worked part-time on Legends broadcasts in 2008.

"We are excited to have a longtime Lexington resident, who is already connected with our fans, represent our team on air," Legends President Alan Stein said.

Elkins replaces Rob Gidel, who served as the Legends play-by-play announcer for one year before moving on to a broadcasting position at the University of Akron. Larry Glover was the voice of the Legends for the franchise's first seven seasons.

The Legends announced several other hires Thursday: Ty Cobb will be Director of Creative Services; Chris Wohlgamuth, Maura Kennedy and Paul Scanlon will join the sales staff; Justina Wright will serve as an accountant.
