College basketball notes: Michigan upsets No. 4 UCLA

DeShawn Sims scored 18 points and Manny Harris added 15 to help Michigan upset No. 4 UCLA 55-52 on Thursday night in the semifinals of the 2K Sports Classic.

With his team trailing 48-46 with 4:16 left, Stu Douglass hit a long three-pointer to give Michigan the lead. Darren Collison was stripped on the other end, leading to a layup by Sims that made it 51-48 Wolverines.

UCLA cut the deficit to two when Josh Shipp made one of two free throws with 56 seconds left. After Michigan worked the shot clock down, Anthony Wright found Sims on a backdoor cut for an emphatic, two-handed dunk that gave the Wolverines a four-point lead with 23.8 seconds remaining.

Nikola Dragovic's three-pointer with 5 seconds to go cut it to 53-52. But Harris hit two free throws and blocked Collison's potential tying three-pointer at the buzzer.

The Wolverines will face No. 10 Duke in the championship game Friday night.

No. 10 Duke 83, Southern Illinois 58: Gerald Henderson scored all 20 of his points in the second half, finally helping Duke find some offensive rhythm in a victory over Southern Illinois in the semifinals of the 2K Sports Classic in New York. Jon Scheyer and Kyle Singler each added 13 points for the Blue Devils.

No. 13 Memphis 83, Chattanooga 71: Doneal Mack scored 19 points and Shawn Taggart notched a double-double for Memphis in a win against Chattanooga in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.

Mack was 5-for-9 from three-point range, and Taggart scored 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Seton Hall 63, No. 19 Southern Cal 61: Jeremy Hazell scored 17 points and Eugene Harvey sank a free throw with five seconds remaining to help Seton Hall upend USC in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.

After Harvey missed his second free throw, USC's Daniel Hackett missed a three-pointer at the buzzer to seal the win for Seton Hall.

Texas Tech 167, East Central 116: Trevor Cook scored a career-high 20 points as Texas Tech easily eclipsed the record for most points scored by the Red Raiders.

Virginia Military Institute 133, Stevenson 72: Former Tates Creek standout Michael Sparks scored 18 points and seven VMI players scored in double figures.

SEC men

Illinois 69, Vanderbilt 63: Demetri McCamey scored 23 points as Illinois defeated Vanderbilt. McCamey's layup broke a tie with 6:22 remaining and started a 7-0 run that put the Illini in front to stay.

Vanderbilt tied the game at 58 on a free throw by A.J. Ogilvy with 6:56 remaining, but then was held scoreless until Andre Walker made a layup and a foul shot with 2:13 to play.

The loss snapped Vanderbilt's 20-game win streak at Memorial Gymnasium.

No. 18 Florida 64, Southern Utah 50: Nick Calathes had 18 points and seven rebounds, leading Florida past Southern Utah despite one of the worst three-point shooting performances in team history.

Calathes was the only Florida player to score in double figures. The Gators went 1-for-16 on threes.

The last time the Gators failed to make a three-pointer was Jan. 11, 1992, against Kentucky.

LSU 77, Alcorn St. 45: Tasmin Mitchell led a balanced scoring attack as the Tigers won in a first-round game of the LSU Invitational. Mitchell, who played just 18 minutes, finished with 12 points and six rebounds for the Tigers.

Arkansas 68, UC-Davis 59: Michael Sanchez had a double-double and Arkansas held off a late California-Davis rally to claim a home victory. Sanchez scored 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead four Arkansas players in double figures.

State men

Georgetown 74, Asbury 60: Kyle Saxton scored 14 points and Abdoulaye Auedraogo added 10 points and nine rebounds to lead the host Tigers past Asbury. Phillip Morrison had 14 points to lead the Eagles, who were outrebounded 51-36.
