No. 15: Kentucky 90, Tennessee 72

Mark Story recounts UK's 25 most memorable basketball games since the 1983-84 season.

Herald-Leader Sports Columnist Mark Story has looked back at Kentucky basketball games since the 1983-84 season, when the Herald-Leader began its electronic archive, and has selected his top 25 most memorable games. One game will be revealed each day until Nov. 11. Check each day to see where your favorite game was ranked.

No. 15: Kentucky 90, Tennessee 72 (Jan. 13, 2009 in Thompson-Boling Arena, Knoxville)

Mark Story's comment: One of the most revered individual records in Kentucky basketball history was Dan Issel's single-game scoring mark of 53 points set in 1970. On a Tuesday night in Knoxville, Jodie Meeks eclipsed the mark in the UK record book. The 6-foot-4 guard drained 15 of 22 shots, hit a school-record 10 of 15 three-pointers and cashed all 14 of his free-throw attempts on the way to a historic 54-point explosion.

Excerpt from the original game story: Meeks scored 26 first-half points, which even for the SEC's leading scorer (24.2 points a game) was a lot. It was more than he'd scored in 55 of his 62 games as a Cat.

"Praise the Lord," said his father, Orestes Meeks, who drove to the game, "because last year was tough. ... It was phenomenal to watch."
