James Paxton twirled a complete-game shutout Friday night as Kentucky blanked Mississippi 9-0 and clinched a spot in next week's Southeastern Conference tournament. The Cats almost certainly will receive an NCAA Tournament bid, too.

"It's been real exciting as of late in the dugout and in the locker room," said senior first baseman Brian Spear, who went 2-for-5 with three RBI on Senior Night at Cliff Hagan Stadium. "We're looking forward to the post-season. We seem to be clicking at the right time."

UK (41-14 overall, 16-13 SEC) takes a seven-game winning streak into Saturday's series and regular-season finale.

"If we win, we've got a possibility to go ahead and host a (NCAA) regional," Spear said. "So we're going to go out and compete."

Brandon Webb is off on another streak.

Last year, he threw 42 straight scoreless innings. Now Arizona's ace has won his first nine starts.

It's a remarkable feat. But it's really no big deal to the laid-back Kentuckian.

"I haven't done anything that I think's unbelievable," said Webb, who extended his string with an 8-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Thursday night.

"Now if I was going out there throwing nine innings at a time and not having any help, and feeling like I'm totally dominating each team, then I'd be like, 'Man, this is pretty good.' But I've had a lot of help with the bullpen and scoring runs, and that just helps you all the way around."

The Reds got homers from Brandon Phillips and Dunn, then won it with the only run in the game not produced by a homer.
Cincinnati loaded the bases in the eighth on Joey Votto's double and a pair of walks from Jensen Lewis (0-2), who was pitching in his hometown. Dunn drew a full-count walk to force in the go-ahead run.
David Weathers (1-2) escaped a threat in the eighth, forcing the Indians to strand a runner at third. Francisco Cordero pitched a perfect ninth for his eighth save in nine chances.

The buzz at Pimlico is all about Big Brown and what he can do for you Saturday as 1-2 favorite in the $1 million Preakness Stakes.

Can he position himself for a possible Triple Crown by adding the Preakness to the Kentucky Derby that he won two weeks ago by 43/4 lengths?
It might all come down to the start when 12 horses (Behindatthebar has scratched) break from the gate for this 13/16-mile race.
That's the opinion of his trainer, Rick Dutrow, and of others whose horses will try to beat the undefeated and seemingly invincible Big Brown.

Johan Santana gave the New York Yankees a firsthand look at the legitimate ace they turned down last winter. Billy Wagner got four outs for his ninth save in nine chances - one day after manager Willie Randolph held a closed-door meeting in response to remarks by the closer that some perceived as critical of his teammates.

Sam Hornish Jr. finished second to also advance into the $1 million main event at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Kasey Kahne also advanced into the All-Star race as the winner of the fan vote.

For Allmendinger and Hornish, it was their best showing yet in their short NASCAR careers. Granted, it came in a 40-lap sprint absent of NASCAR's biggest stars. They were already qualified for the All-Star race and sat out the preliminary, which was for drivers not already in the show.

But it didn't matter to Allmendinger, who has struggled mightily since moving to NASCAR from the now defunct Champ Car Series. He had a difficult rookie season with Red Bull Racing, and the team pulled him from the car for five races earlier this season so he could learn while Mike Skinner temporarily filled his seat.
"Heck, I feel I won the Daytona 500," Allmendinger said. "Nobody understands how much this means to me after what we went through as a team. It may be just an All-Star challenge, but it means the world to me."

Lorena Ochoa said her own little goodbye to Annika Sorenstam. The two-time defending champion shot a 5-under 67 on Saturday and left the retiring Sorenstam in her wake after two rounds of the rain-shorted Sybase Classic.

Ochoa will enter Sunday's final round of the now 54-hole tournament with a 9-under 135 total and a two-shot lead over third-year tour player Teresa Lu and veteran Sophie Gustafson. South Koreans H.J. Choi and Na Yeon Choi - no relation - were three behind.

Brittany Lang was four back and Sorenstam, who announced Tuesday that this would be her final year on the LPGA Tour, was five behind after a 1-over 73 that included a double bogey after hitting a tree on a par 5, and a bogey on her final hole.

"I don't need any more motivation," said Ochoa, looking for her sixth win of the year. "I am pretty motivated to win. And about Annika having all this time from the media, she deserves it. She knows I like to win, and I want to be on the top this year."
Ochoa has won 16 of 23 LPGA Tour events in which she has taken the lead into the final round, including all five this year and six in a row dating to last year.

Blake DeWitt hit a two-run homer in the second inning to put the Los Angeles Dodgers ahead to stay, and they went on to hand Ervin Santana his first loss of the season with a 6-3 victory over the Angels on Saturday.

Chan Ho Park made his first start for the Dodgers in almost seven years, limiting the Angels to two runs - one earned - over four innings. The 34-year-old right-hander gave up three hits, walked two, hit Vladimir Guerrero with a pitch and struck out three. He left with the Dodgers up 4-2.

Because Park pitched just four innings, Hong-Chih Kuo (3-1) earned the win by shutting out the Angels for four innings. He held the Angels to two hits, struck out four and walked none.
Santana (6-1), coming off his worst outing of the season, gave up four runs on five hits in six innings. He walked three, hit a batter and struck out five.

The Captains broke a 2-2 tie with a three-run eighth inning, then shut down the Legends in the top of the ninth to earn Lake County's fourth straight win, 5-2 over visiting Lexington.

The Legends, down by two in the top of the third, scored their only runs off Captains starter Ryan Morris.

Center fielder Collin DeLome doubled with two outs to start the rally. Catcher Max Sapp's line drive to center scored DeLome, and a ground-ball single by first baseman Eric Taylor brought in Sapp.

The score remained tied until the bottom of the eighth, when Legends reliever Matt Koons got into trouble, giving up three runs, including one on a wild pitch.
In the ninth, Captains pitcher Vinnie Pestano struck out Catlin Everett, got Matthew Cusick to fly out to center and struck out Craig Corrado to quickly end the game and earn the save.

As the propriety of recruiting younger prospects gets debated nationwide, Kentucky has offered a scholarship to another high school freshman.

On Sunday, UK offered a scholarship to Jeremiah Davis III, who is completing his ninth-grade year at Muncie (Ind.) Central High School.

"I was honored," Davis said Monday about the offer. "I don't know if I'm going to take it yet. I'm still a freshman."

Indiana, Ohio State and Tennessee are among the schools that also have expressed a recruiting interest in Davis. None has yet offered a scholarship, the player's father said.

UK Coach Billy Gillispie saw Davis play in the same recent Akron, Ohio, basketball event that led to commitments from eighth-grader Michael Avery and ninth-grader Vinny Zollo. Davis played on the same AAU team, Indiana Elite.

Lorenzen 'shocked' at Woodson pick

Jared Lorenzen admitted to being shocked when he heard that the New York Giants had selected his former teammate, Andre Woodson , in the sixth round of the NFL Draft two weekends ago. The selection of Woodson gave the Giants five quarterbacks to work with. Most NFL teams keep only three.

"Well, first of all, I was shocked that Andre fell so low," Lorenzen said this week. "And then I was shocked from the standpoint that we already have four quarterbacks. But I do think it was a great value pick. Andre is a second- or third-round guy and you get him in the sixth round."

Woodson is participating in the Giants' rookie mini-camp this weekend. He'll be trying to put himself in a quarterback rotation that already includes Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning , Lorenzen, former No. 1 overall pick David Carr and journeyman Anthony Wright .

Lorenzen, who served as Manning's backup last season, is no stranger to quarterback competitions. Former UK coach Hal Mumme made waves when he gave Lorenzen, then a redshirt freshman, the job over incumbent Dusty Bonner in the summer before the 2000 season, and Lorenzen also battled with Shane Boyd to keep his job later in his career.

But now Lorenzen is firmly entrenched in what he calls the "most intense competition of my career."

Kentucky's best-ever major-league pitcher?

Kentucky high school baseball should be proud of itself for producing Brandon Webb , arguably the best pitcher in the major leagues today. Long before he was the ace of the Arizona Diamondbacks, he was the ace of the Ashland Blazer Tomcats.

Several other current big-league pitchers rose from our high school ranks. Paul Byrd (St. Xavier) is a reliable arm for the Cleveland Indians. Joe Blanton (Franklin-Simpson) is a consistent winner with the Oakland A's. Jeremy Sowers (Ballard) is a promising left-hander with the Indians. Trever Miller (Trinity) is a reliever with the Tampa Bay Rays. Scott Downs (Pleasure Ridge Park) is seeing spot duty with the Toronto Blue Jays.

The way Webb has started this season, he could be on track to win his second Cy Young Award. By the time he retires, he might be the best pitcher Kentucky high school baseball has ever produced.

Until then, who should be considered the best?

Jim Bunning , a Hall of Famer (224 career wins) and current U.S. Senator? Technically, no. He was born and lived in Southgate in northern Kentucky, but he played high school baseball at Cincinnati St. Xavier.

Four years ago, Sayre baseball coach Scotty Sutton could barely find enough players, much less find a win in the treacherous 11th Region.

In 2004, Sayre, the small school that goes up against baseball powerhouses like Henry Clay, Scott County and Bryan Station, had just enough players to field a team and zero upperclassmen. There was talk among the parents to skip out on the varsity season and play a junior varsity schedule because of the youth.

Ultimately, Sutton and his squad decided to play a varsity schedule with two eighth-graders and one seventh-grader in the starting lineup and no juniors or seniors on the roster. The Spartans managed just five wins, but Sutton had found a solid core of players.

The next three seasons, Sayre went a combined 59-25, including a 20-8 mark last year, all while playing in one of the toughest regions in Kentucky. Sutton said without their struggles in 2004, the team might have never experienced the success they have had the last three years.

"It was the best thing we ever did," Sutton said of the decision to play in 2004. "We grew from there. The core of that team was the group that did so well the last three years."
