It happens nearly every time Marques Maybin goes out.

Maybe it's in the Wal-Mart while he's running errands. Maybe it's at Burger King at 2 a.m. when he gets a late-night craving for fries. Maybe it's in class at Louisville, where he's finishing up a psychology degree he started working on more than a decade ago.

At some point, someone will see the face of the player who lit up Freedom Hall during his basketball career and tell him to hang in there, that if he ever needs anything, just ask.

It happens nearly every day. And five years after the motorcycle accident that left him paralyzed below the waist, the former Cardinal star says he still needs the encouragement, still loves it when a 15-minute dash to the grocery store turns into a two-hour chat with whomever is walking by.

Rick Pitino says his team owes fans an apology after the Cardinals were blown out by Western Kentucky on Sunday.

Pitino blamed Louisville's 68-54 loss on poor practice habits and his team's inability to match Western Kentucky's intensity. In a note published on his Web site www.rickpitino.com on Monday, Pitino said his team's lethargic performance in practice translated into an uninspired game against the Hilltoppers.

Louisville shot just 27 percent from the field and was dominated in the lane, getting outrebounded 58-46 and outscored 24-18. The loss dropped the Cardinals from No. 3 to No. 11 in this week's Associated Press poll.

Bad situation for Coach Good

Coaching nomad Max Good , whose whistle-tooting wanderings include a stop at Eastern Kentucky University, became the acting coach at Loyola Marymount last weekend.

You could argue that Good is a bad fit for the job. Good wouldn't argue with that assessment.

An unbelievable stretch of bad luck hit Loyola Marymount this season. A series of injuries reduced the roster to seven scholarship players (two of which were career walk-ons until last summer). Then the coach, Bill Bayno , removed himself from the job last weekend to seek treatment for stress and anxiety.

While seeing an "extremely bright" future thanks to two transfers sitting out this season and a solid recruiting class, Good knows this year will be a struggle. A schedule including games against UCLA and Arizona the next three weeks doesn't help.

Third-place games might be the toughest of all for a college basketball team. Playing one the morning after a one-point loss to a fellow Top 10 team put Texas in a really difficult spot.

"You're always disappointed when you don't get to play in a championship game. Consolation games are really hard to play in, but I told the team last night this would be a character game and a chance to find out what we're about," Texas Coach Rick Barnes said.
