Tubby Smith offers scholarship to Kentucky standout

- ccosby@herald-leader.com

Former University of Kentucky basketball coach Tubby Smith is tapping into his Bluegrass roots as he tries to turn around the Minnesota program.

Smith offered a scholarship to Aaron Cosby, a 6-foot-3 junior shooting guard from Jeffersontown on Tuesday night, according to Cosby's father, George.

Cosby is one of Kentucky's top prospects in the class of 2010. He sat out most of last season after transferring to J-town from Manual.

Cosby originally committed to Massachusetts but reopened his recruitment after Coach Travis Ford left for Oklahoma State. Cosby also has scholarship offers from Oklahoma State, Miami (Ohio) and Western Kentucky and has received interest from Purdue, Dayton, Virginia Tech and Louisville.

Smith led the Gophers to a 20-14 mark and an NIT bid in his first season at Minnesota. He has already received a commitment from one of the nation's top prospects in 2009, Royce White, a 6-foot-7 forward from Hopkins, Minn., who is listed as a five-star recruit by Rivals.com.
