Churchill meet kicks off Saturday
SPECIAL TO THE HERALD-LEADER
Churchill Downs kicks off its 52-day Spring Meet Saturday with an 11-race program headed by the 84th running of the $100,000-added Derby Trial.
The meet lasts until July 6.
Post time for the first race on Saturday's card is 12:45 p.m. and gates open at 11 a.m.
A field of 10 3-year-olds will contest the 71/2-furlong Derby Trial. The Derby Trial is the first event of a Spring stakes schedule that will feature 31 stakes races -- 26 of which are graded -- during 10 weeks of racing.
Saturday's opening day program will also include a special 2008 Spring Meet T-shirt giveaway to the first 5,000 fans with paid admission.
Other Derby Week promotions include an autograph session with NASCAR drivers Dale Jarrett, David Reutimann and Michael Waltrip from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
The stakes schedule is topped by next Saturday's $2 million Kentucky Derby, which will follow five other stakes events on a day with total purses equaling $3.35 million.
