The Kentucky Horse Racing Authority said on Monday that the Eight Belles tragedy will be investigated just as all racing injuries are.

"In light of the Eight Belles tragedy, the KHRA intends to enhance its protocols in this area. The KHRA will use this information to study and recommend improvements related to the safety of racing," according to a statement released late Monday.

The racing authority also responded to a letter from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. KHRA said it plans no changes at this time in training, racing surfaces, numbers of races or the use of whips.

PETA said it plans a protest at the KHRA's Kentucky Horse Park headquarters on Tuesday.

A necropsy of Eight Belles was performed at the University of Kentucky's Livestock Disease Diagnostic Center at the request of Dr. Lafe Nichols, the KHRA chief state veterinarian.

Results of the inquiry probably will not be available for a couple of weeks, according to Churchill Downs spokesman John Asher, who said he had spoken with Nichols.

At the request of Eight Belles' owner, Fox Hill Farm, she was cremated. No decision has been announced on where her remains will be interred, Asher said.
