Red Mile: Windsong Soprano flirts with record to open Grand Circuit

Windsong Soprano made her American debut a successful one and almost broke a world record at The Red Mile Tuesday as the Grand Circuit kicked off in Lexington.

The daughter of the late Windsong's Legacy won the $64,100 ninth race — part of the Bluegrass Series — which showcased 2-year-old freshman trotting fillies. Windsong's Legacy briefly surrendered the lead to Missy's Doubt Fire before unleashing a final quarter-mile in 282⁄5 seconds and easily jogging home to a 6-length victory in 1:534⁄5.

The winning time was a lifetime best for the filly and was one second off the world record set at The Red Mile last year by world champion Snow White.

Windsong Soprano came to Lexington fresh off a win in the $466,488 Peaceful Way Stakes on Sept. 14 at Mohawk Racetrack in Ontario, Canada.

The victory was the third in six career starts, boosting her earnings to more than $315,000.
