Anak Nakal comes on late to win Pa. Derby
Associated PressBENSALEM, Pa. — Anak Nakal surged ahead of the favorites to win the $1 million Pennsylvania Derby at Philadelphia Park on Monday.
With Joe Bravo in the saddle, the 3-year-old worked his way through traffic on the far turn and seized the lead within the shadow of the finish line.
Anak Nakal, who was 16-to-1 and won for the third time in 10 lifetime starts, finished a neck ahead of Acai.
Smooth Air, the 4-1 favorite who won the Ohio Derby in May, was 1½ lengths farther behind in third. West Virginia Derby winner Ready Set never got in gear and finished 11th in the 13-horse field.
Anak Nakal, a son of Victory Gallop who finished seventh in the Kentucky Derby, won $532,000, boosting his earnings to $875,000 for Four Roses Thoroughbreds of Kassem Masri of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Hopeful end at Saratoga
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — Vineyard Haven won the $250,000 Hopeful Stakes for 2-year-olds by 21/4 lengths Monday at Saratoga Race Course.
Alan Garcia, the leading rider at the meet that concluded Monday, rode Vineyard Haven, who benefitted from a poor start by favored Munnings and Cribnote.
Vineyard Haven ran the 7 furlongs in 1:23.40 for his second victory in three starts. He paid $20.90, $8.80 and $4.90. Cribnote paid $6.60 and $3.70 and Munnings returned $2.80 to show.
Brownie Points triumphs
OKLAHOMA CITY — Brownie Points, the only female in a seven-horse field, rallied in the stretch to pass Tricky Causeway and win the $148,500 Edward J. DeBartolo Memorial Breeders' Cup Handicap at Remington Park.
The win by the favored 5-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Forest Wildcat came in Remington Park's most lucrative turf race.
