For Florida, a place in history as it tries to go undefeated in the Southeastern Conference regular season for the first time since the Gators did it under Steve Spurrier in the 1996 national championship season. This, Spurrier's in the way of his alma mater's try at perfection as South Carolina's coach. The Gamecocks want to end a two-game losing streak and stop the latest late-season slide under Spurrier.

Three freshmen Tennessee football players, including highly touted wide receiver recruit Nu'Keese Richardson and starting safety Janzen Jackson, were charged with attempted armed robbery Thursday morning.

Richardson, 18, and Jackson, 18, along with defensive back Mike Edwards, 18, and companion Marie Montmarquet, 22, were each charged with three counts of attempted armed robbery in connection with an incident at a gas station in an area known as "The Strip" at the edge of Tennessee's campus.

Richardson and Edwards were being held Thursday afternoon on bonds of $19,500, and Jackson was released on his own recognizance.

"Mr. Jackson vehemently asserts his innocence, and we hope that this will become apparent in the next 24 to 48 hours," Jackson's attorney Don Bosch said in a statement. It was not immediately known if Richardson and Edwards had attorneys.

The three players are the first arrested during the tenure of first-year coach Lane Kiffin, who on a Wednesday teleconference touted his team's clean record. Kiffin's predecessor, Phillip Fulmer, was often criticized for being too lax on a number of his players who had discipline problems.

Dumb penalties. Dropped passes. Receivers giving up on routes. Turnovers. No ranking. Four losses.

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops is largely in uncharted territory in his 11th season with the Sooners, one marred by all those problems and a rash of devastating injuries.

Like many coaches, Stoops considers discipline and hard work to be the cornerstones of his program. And he hasn't seen enough of either one from his team to overcome the adversity.

Blame the coaches for failing to teach the players that discipline or blame the players for failing to put in the hard work.

Or, Stoops says, point fingers at both.

Thomas got three players to sign letters of intent Wednesday, including 6-foot-8 forward Dominique Ferguson - who originally committed to Kentucky and was ranked among the nation's top 50 prospects by multiple recruiting services.

Thomas called it "a special day."

DeJuan Wright, a 6-foot-4 guard who will transfer in from Gillette (Wyo.) Junior College, also signed. So did 6-foot-3 guard Richaud Pack of Birmingham, Mich.

Andy Rautins made seven 3-pointers and scored 22 points, leading Syracuse past Robert Morris 100-60 on Wednesday night in the 2K Sports Classic.

Syracuse (2-0), which opened its season with a 75-43 victory over Albany on Monday night, will play California in a week at Madison Square Garden in the next round of the tournament that benefits Coaches vs. Cancer.

Rautins, who missed all six shots he attempted and then rolled his left ankle in the season opener, found his range early against the Colonials (0-1). He hit a 3 from the left corner and another from the right wing to help Syracuse take a 10-6 lead in the first 5 minutes. He made three more 3s in the first 3:09 of the second half to give Syracuse a 71-36 advantage.

Rautins finished 7 of 10 on 3-pointers, just shy of the school record of nine 3s he shares with Gerry McNamara.

Mississippi defensive end Greg Hardy is out for the season with a broken left wrist.

School spokesman Daniel Snowden says Hardy will have surgery Thursday in Jackson and is expected to miss the rest of the season.

The 6-foot-5, 275-pound Millington, Tenn., native hurt his arm earlier this season, then aggravated the injury last weekend against Northern Arizona. He'll have a screw placed in the wrist during surgery.

Once considered one of the most dangerous defensive players in the nation, Hardy has been limited by injuries in his final two seasons. A broken foot cost him four games last season and parts of several others. He appeared ready for his senior year but sprained his ankle in the opener and hasn't been much of a factor.

Terrelle Pryor has a warning for his Ohio State teammates: Forget last week and take Iowa seriously.

Pryor said Wednesday night that the 10th-ranked Buckeyes must be careful not to follow last week's big victory over Penn State with a letdown in the winner-take-all Rose Bowl battle against No. 15 Iowa on Saturday.

The sophomore quarterback said coach Jim Tressel had illustrated the pitfalls of resting on week-old laurels.

"Coach Tres showed a statistic how all these teams go and beat a big team and then come in the next game (and lose)," Pryor said after practice.

He cited the Buckeyes' loss to Purdue, which was just 1-5 at the time, earlier this season. He said Ohio State was coming off an emotional victory against Wisconsin and didn't see the Boilermakers waiting to ambush them.

The Southeastern Conference is the Rolls-Royce of college football leagues, with the last three national champions, two teams in the running for this season's title and huge TV contracts.

Boom times for sure. But troubled ones, too.

The league has been dealing with seemingly endless questions stemming from a string of controversial officiating calls in close games involving highly ranked teams. That followed a preseason run-in with national media outlets over a new SEC policy.

The in-season issues forced commissioner Mike Slive to make the unusual moves of publicly announcing the suspension of an officiating crew, increasing the penalties for coaches who criticize officials and fining Florida coach Urban Meyer $30,000 for less-than-inflammatory - though critical - remarks after the new policy was in place.

"Has it been difficult? Yes. Has it been painful? Yes," Slive said this week in an interview with The Associated Press in his downtown office. "But this league has been a great league for 76 years. There have been different issues at different times. I fully understand the disappointment the fans feel when something happens that impacts their team.
