In a July 9 story about potential NCAA rules violations in Oklahoma State's baseball program, The Associated Press reported erroneously that the school said coach Frank Anderson initially determined that a gift to a former player wasn't a rules violation.
The Penn State Nittany Lions' workout schedule Friday includes lifting weights and pull-ups, followed by an odd assortment of drills like pulling sleds and pushing around giant tractor-trailer tires in front of hundreds of fans.

The routine feels just as grueling as it sounds, receiver Brett Brackett said.

All for charity, though.

What started as a weightlifting event six years ago to raise money at Penn State for kidney cancer research has turned into a full-fledged philanthropic organization called "Uplifting Athletes" involving other football programs dedicated to fighting rare diseases.

"It's a grueling workout in general," said Brackett, head of Penn State's chapter. "The thing that makes it worthwhile is it's for charity, and the fans really seem to enjoy it."

The NCAA is citing Oklahoma State for a potential major rules violation in its baseball program.

The NCAA asked university President Burns Hargis to send school officials to a meeting of an infractions committee meeting in Indianapolis on Aug. 7-8.

The Oklahoman and Tulsa World first reported the potential violations, citing documents obtained under state open records laws.

Oklahoma State spokesman Gary Shutt says a violation was committed when a former baseball player received a 10-year-old car from an out-of-state family he stayed with while playing in a summer league.

Shutt says the university contends its was not a major violation, because the family had no prior connection with Oklahoma State athletics. He says the player did not appear in any games for the Cowboys after receiving the car.

A junior defensive back at Western Carolina has died after participating in a voluntary offseason workout.

Western Carolina spokesman Daniel Hooker says Ja'Quayvin Smalls collapsed Wednesday and was pronounced dead about 7:30 p.m. at Harris Regional Hospital in Sylva.

The school says he collapsed while running during an evening workout session. Observers said Smalls had complained of cramps at the beginning of sprint exercises and had been removed from the lineup to stretch.

The workout was the first for Smalls, who enrolled in Western Carolina's summer school. He had transferred from Georgia Military College, where he ranked second in tackles.

Athletic director Chip Smith says Smalls' death was especially tragic, since he was so young.

After taking its fight to change the Bowl Championships Series to Congress, the Mountain West Conference is reluctantly agreeing to a BCS television deal.

That doesn't mean the conference is finished pushing for a playoff.

University of Utah president Michael Young issued a statement on behalf of the conference Wednesday, one day after he testified before a U.S. Senate subcommittee.

In the statement, Young said the Mountain West felt it had no choice but to sign the agreement with ESPN, which runs through the 2013 season. The Mountain West champion would still not automatically qualify for a spot in one of the top-tier bowls.

"While the Mountain West has expressed serious concerns with the various fundamental flaws in the current BCS system, our various good faith initiatives to generate reform have thus far not been accepted," Young said. "If a conference wishes to compete at the highest levels of college football, and the only postseason system in place for that is the BCS, no one conference can afford to drop out and penalize its football programs and student-athletes."

Washington running backs Brandon Johnson and David Freeman have been ruled academically ineligible for the upcoming season.

The announcement from the school came Tuesday.

Johnson, a junior from Hawthorne, Calif., rushed for 194 yards in nine games last season, making him the team's third-leading rusher. Freeman, a sophomore from Inglewood, Calif., ran for 152 yards in four games with the winless Huskies.

Neither player was expected to start for the Huskies this season. After spring practice, Washington listed three freshman - Chris Polk, Willie Griffin and Demetrius Bronson - on its depth chart at tailback.

There's only so much our nation's politicians can do in their limited time in Washington, D.C., and only so many issues they can tackle.

A national health care plan promises to be a big topic this summer, and there will likely be a vote on a new Supreme Court nominee. There are two wars to monitor, and bills to be passed to keep the economy afloat.

And, of course, there's the Bowl Championship Series to fix.

The Senate plunges into that on Tuesday with yet another hearing on the evils of big schools beating up on little schools and the ensuing damage it does to college athletics. Proving that there is no offseason in pandering to the constituents, Sen. Orrin Hatch sought the hearing, ostensibly to debate possible antitrust violations by the BCS.

Hatch, for those who don't know, is one of the most influential Republicans in the Senate, so when he asks for something he often gets it. He's also the senior senator from the state of Utah, home of what very well may have been the best college football team in the nation last year.

Former San Diego State right-hander Stephen Strasburg, the No. 1 overall draft pick by the Washington Nationals last month, has been selected as the winner of the Dick Howser Trophy as college baseball's player of the year.

Strasburg went 13-1 with a 1.32 ERA and led the nation with 195 strikeouts while leading Tony Gwynn's Aztecs to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1991. He beat out North Carolina first baseman Dustin Ackley and Arizona State right-hander Mike Leake for the award.

The announcement was made Thursday as part of a weekend of festivities in Lubbock celebrating this year's College Baseball Hall of Fame inductees.
The university announced his departure Thursday, one day after his contract had expired.
The Bruins won a Pac-10 team championship and two West Region team titles during Venegas' tenure. They were fifth in the conference championships and seventh in the regional this season, but didn't score a point at last month's NCAA championships.

"We felt a change in leadership was necessary," said Glenn Toth, senior associate athletic director.

Venegas spent 28 years with the program as an assistant and head coach. He declined an offer to stay on as coach of the throwers, Toth said.

Kearney, 49, spent the last nine seasons as Mike Brey's associate head coach, serving as national recruiting coordinator. In those years, the Irish were 188-101 and reached the postseason every year. Holy Cross is Kearney's first head coaching position.
