Automotive Q&A: The importance of proper torque on lug nuts

Q. A little while back I had a flat tire, which was changed along the road by AAA. I then had the flat tire fixed by a gas station and put back on the car. My neighbor accompanied me to the gas station and when we were on the way home he said I should have the wheel nuts "torqued" by someone, as the young man at the gas station didn't do this. I was hoping you might explain to me what this is. I didn't want to sound ignorant by asking him what he meant by this.
