Former University of Kentucky quarterback Jared Lorenzen was waived Monday by the New York Giants.
The move ends Lorenzen's three-year run with Giants, who signed him as a free agent in 2004.
Lorenzen left the team during the 2004 mini-camp for personal reasons, but returned for the 2005 season. He played in four regular-season games and one post-season game with the Giants. All eight of his regular-season passes came last season, with four completions for 28 yards. He also used his 285-pound frame to rush twice for first downs in short-yardage situations in 2006.
Lorenzen started last season as the backup to Eli Manning but lost that job to Anthony Wright after an injury.
Lorenzen signed a one-year tender worth $927,000 in the spring, but his fate was likely sealed later in the off-season when the Giants signed former No. 1 pick David Carr and drafted Andre Woodson, Lorenzen's former teammate at Kentucky, to help bolster the depth behind Manning.
Woodson will now compete with Carr and Wright for backup duties behind Manning. The Giants have said they like Woodson's long-term potential.
“This was too good to pass up,” Giants Coach Tom Coughlin said after the Giants drafted Woodson. “He was highly rated on our board.”
Lorenzen set University of Kentucky school records in total offense, passing yards, and passing touchdowns, surpassing many of the records set by former No. 1 pick Tim Couch.
Lorenzen, who couldn't be reached for comment Monday night, could still find work for a team looking for a No. 2 or 3 quarterback.
The Giants also waived receiver Todd Lowber, long snapper Nick Leeson, defensive tackle Brian Soi and offensive lineman Jacobs Hobbs — all first-year players.
