DOE awards $61M to coalition studying greenhouse gas storage

WASHINGTON --

The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded $61.1 million to a multistate environmental partnership to develop new ways of capturing and storing greenhouse gases.

The project will be conducted by a Columbus, Ohio-based Battelle Memorial Laboratories.

The Midwest Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership will conduct tests to find more ways to store carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in underground geological formations, cropland and forest land.

The project is one of seven in the U.S. It will study carbon dioxide storage in the Mount Simon Sandstone Formation, which stretches from Kentucky through Ohio.

Republican U.S. Senator George Voinovich of Ohio announced the funding Tuesday. He says the study will help craft a comprehensive solution to climate change.

The partnership covers Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York and Michigan.
