American businessman Stan Kroenke has increased his stake in Arsenal.

The 61-year-old director spent $2.21 million to raise his holding to 28.58 percent from 28.3. Friday's move strengthens his position as the club's biggest shareholder.

Already a director at the Gunners, Kroenke is approaching the 30-percent threshold that triggers a mandatory offer for the remaining shares.

The next largest shareholder is Uzbekistan-born billionaire Alisher Usmanov, who owns just over 25 percent of the club through investment vehicle Red and White Holdings but is not on the club board.

The Penn State Nittany Lions' workout schedule Friday includes lifting weights and pull-ups, followed by an odd assortment of drills like pulling sleds and pushing around giant tractor-trailer tires in front of hundreds of fans.

The routine feels just as grueling as it sounds, receiver Brett Brackett said.

All for charity, though.

What started as a weightlifting event six years ago to raise money at Penn State for kidney cancer research has turned into a full-fledged philanthropic organization called "Uplifting Athletes" involving other football programs dedicated to fighting rare diseases.

"It's a grueling workout in general," said Brackett, head of Penn State's chapter. "The thing that makes it worthwhile is it's for charity, and the fans really seem to enjoy it."

The U.S. Women's Open has the makings of a thrilling drama - even if an LPGA Tour hierarchy controversy keeps intruding.

Two of the biggest names in women's golf are just off the lead; a record-setting 14-year-old amateur is just strokes behind; a qualifier from the LPGA's developmental tour is in the mix; and the first-round leader is feeling awfully comfortable on a tough course that yields few birdies and fewer under-par rounds.

And that's after Thursday's opening round at Saucon Valley Country Club.

Na Yeon Choi of South Korea birdied her first three holes, and four of her first five, racing to an opening round 3-under 68 for a one-stroke lead.

At just 19 years old, Sahel Kazemi thought she had it all: She was dating former NFL star Steve McNair, partying in VIP rooms and vacationing in Las Vegas.

When her family visited Nashville for her 20th birthday less than two months ago, they said she was very happy and planning to move in with McNair. She thought he was in the final stages of a divorce from his wife of 12 years.

Only there was no divorce. And Kazemi's happiness soon changed into something much darker.

Nashville police say in the days leading up to the murder-suicide, Kazemi saw another young woman leaving the condominium where she and McNair would soon be found dead. She was worried about money. She was arrested for DUI. She bought a gun and told a co-worker she was thinking about "ending it."

About two weeks before police say Kazemi killed McNair and herself, she poured out her troubles in a chance meeting with Vera Mosley Buckner, a customer at the Dave and Buster's restaurant where Kazemi worked. The young waitress asked Buckner, a stranger, if she could talk to her.

Although NASCAR contends it has the best anti-doping procedures in sports, some experts see flaws in the policy and question whether drivers are getting a fair shake in the lab or a safe ride on the track.

The debate between outfits that run Olympic-style testing programs and leagues that enforce their own - NASCAR, baseball and the NFL among them - has been going on for a while, but it's taking on new relevance in the wake of Jeremy Mayfield's case against NASCAR.

NASCAR suspended the 40-year-old driver May 9, eight days after failing a random drug test. NASCAR has said Mayfield tested positive for methamphetamine, but he has denied ever using the illegal drug.

Last week, a federal judge issued an injunction and overturned the drug suspension to let Mayfield to compete. NASCAR is appealing the judge's ruling, saying that allowing "a proven methamphetamine user" back on the track could lead to fatal consequences for other competitors and fans.

The Mayfield case "will be used as Exhibit 1 of what can go horribly wrong when you don't have an effective policy in place," said Travis Tygart, the CEO of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, which oversees America's Olympic athletes.

Lincecum (10-2) walked Evereth Cabrera to start the game and then Will Venable with two outs in the second. After that, he retired 13 straight and struck out the side in order in the sixth. Tony Gwynn broke up the bid when he singled to left leading off the seventh on Lincecum's 82nd pitch.
Adrian Gonzalez and Kevin Kouzmanoff followed with singles and Lincecum's night was done after consecutive two-out walks to load the bases. He left to a standing ovation, but was clearly disappointed in how quickly things turned.
Ian Stewart started the rally by drawing a one-out walk, and Mike Gonzalez (3-2) then hit Chris Iannetta with a pitch. Gonzalez retired Carlos Gonzalez on a pop up before Atkins, batting for reliever Juan Rincon (1-0), lashed a double down the left field line to snap the third tie of the game.

The way Jerry Stackhouse's contract was structured, the Dallas Mavericks knew they could parlay him into a key player for next season. As it turned out, a lot of teams benefited.
The Mavericks, Raptors, Grizzlies and Magic combined in a massive swap Thursday that included eight players, a draft pick and stacks of cash. The deal sent Shawn Marion to Dallas, Stackhouse to Memphis and helped seal the transaction that moved Hedo Turkoglu from Orlando to Toronto.
