Fire investigators say they have found no sign of arson in a blaze that killed 27 horses at a thoroughbred training facility in western Kentucky.

The state fire marshal's office said Friday that the cause of the fire at Riverside Downs is undetermined, but it does not appear suspicious.

Deputy state fire marshal Chris Pentecost said damage to the barn made it impossible to determine an exact cause. He said the fire originated near an electrical panel.

The pre-dawn blaze Thursday was the second deadly fire this year at the former racetrack, which is outside Henderson, near the Indiana border.
In January, six horses died in a fire that was blamed on a vending machine electrical cord.

South African organizers of the 2010 World Cup expressed concern Friday about the effect the global financial crisis will have on the tournament, which is already running well over budget.

The South African government has had to allocate an extra $136 million for stadium construction because of rising prices, pushing total costs to nearly $2.9 billion - a tenfold increase from the original budget.

The South African rand has fallen about 30 percent against the dollar in recent weeks and as the U.S. and Europe slide into recession, there are concerns fans will not have money to travel or buy tickets.

Danny Jordaan, the head of the local World Cup organizing committee, said organizers were taking a "wait and see approach" but that there were indications that the world financial outlook will be more positive by 2010.

"Even if you accept people have fewer dollars in their pockets, those dollars will buy more rands. So people may still travel because the destination becomes cheaper," he said.

Texas Tech gave coach Pat Knight something his famous father never received from the Red Raiders: 167 points.

Trevor Cook scored a career-high 20 and was one of 10 players in double figures for Texas Tech, which shattered the school record for points Thursday night in a 167-115 victory over East Central.

Alan Voskuil and John Roberson each had 17 points, and Mike Singletary and Wally Dunn added 16 apiece for the Red Raiders (3-0). The previous school mark was 128 points, set in a double-overtime win against Texas on Feb. 20, 1994.

"I'm a big believer in confidence," Knight said. "We got 10 guys that score double figures. Proves to them they can at least put it in the bucket. Our defense is a little different. The game is just so different from anything. We're not going to face anything like this."

These are exciting times at Texas Tech, where the football team is ranked No. 2 in the nation thanks to star quarterback Graham Harrell, All-American receiver Michael Crabtree and coach Mike Leach's pass-happy offense. Nicklas Backstrom and Brooks Laich scored for the Capitals, who had won six of their previous seven games and hadn't taken fewer than 27 shots on net in any of their previous 18 games contests this season.
Washington played without defenseman Mike Green, sidelined by a shoulder injury after being checked hard into the end boards by Anaheim's Chris Pronger during the first period of Wednesday's 6-4 win.
Jets have legitimate shot at ending Titans' run

The New York Jets showed the nation last Thursday night that the acquisitions of Kris Jenkins, Alan Faneca and Brett Favre, among others, have made them a legitimate playoff contender.

Their game Sunday in Tennessee may determine if they can be more than that.

The Titans enter the contest 10-0, the NFL's only unbeaten team. The Jets, who lead the AFC East at 7-3, are the most formidable opponent they will face until the final two games of the regular season, when they play host to Pittsburgh, then finish at Indianapolis; Detroit, Cleveland and Houston are in between.

Tennessee, which has a four-game lead over the Colts in the AFC South with six games to go, can clinch a wild-card spot with a victory, although it's a foregone conclusion the Titans will win the division, which they could clinch in a couple of weeks. As their run has continued, they've played down the unbeaten aspect, a good idea because New England's unbeaten season last season was spoiled by a Super Bowl loss.

"We've got 10 wins," says guard Jake Scott, who twice played on teams in Indianapolis that started with a double-digit unbeaten streak, including one in 2005 that started 13-0, then was eliminated in its first playoff game. "That's a lot. To go undefeated, we'd have to win nine more. We're just a little over halfway. You're not even in that ballpark yet."
