On May 11, the Herald-Leader published an Associated Press story on the 100th anniversary of Mother's Day that fails to recognize the real origins of this holiday.
Greg Fischer was truly impressive as he addressed a small group May 8. No candidate on any level in this election has given more cogent answers to the tough questions on local and global levels.
If we are going to hold Sen. Barack Obama responsible for his former pastor's comments and question the candidate's character for sitting in a congregation pastored by the Rev. Jeremiah Wright for nearly 20 years and not leaving the church, are we also going to hold Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton responsible for her husband's lying under oath about an extramarital affair and not divorcing him?
On May 8, I again saw language that made me wonder about unconscious biases. This time, a McClatchy Newspapers article repeated the often-cited fact that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton won less than 10 percent of the "black vote" in Indiana and North Carolina. Yet all media reports I have seen or heard refer to her base of support as "young, less educated, white males."

Tom Eblen's May 9 Herald-Leader column describing the death of two Dunbar students on a narrow county road in which he stated, "the road isn't the problem" is hurtful to the victims' grieving families and friends.

Again, I am shocked by the incredible tackiness of Kentucky politicians and the Herald-Leader. I am referring to the Gov. Steve Beshear's comment about fixing our nation by having Vice President Dick Cheney take President Bush on a hunting trip, a reference to the unfortunate hunting accident involving Cheney and a friend in 2006.

I am shocked and dismayed by the closure of the Rite-Aid pharmacy at Limestone and Main streets. The pharmacist was well-known to his patrons and vice versa, and the employees knew everyone who came in for prescriptions, toiletries, money orders and other essentials. Downtowners now have nothing within walking distance. What kind of city vision is that?
I am an animal lover and participate in Thoroughbred racing, but I take great offense at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals' illogical and ill-advised requests to suspend and perhaps file criminal animal-abuse charges against Eight Belles' jockey, Gabriel Saez, as well as her owner and trainer.
I am a Democrat. I want to win in November, but like a lot of my friends, I am not happy with my choices. I hope that the convention will lock up and that the party will have to bring in a compromise candidate, such as former Vice President Al Gore or former Sen. John Edwards. This is why I will vote "uncommitted" on May 20. We can do that.
It was perplexing that a reader could be angry that the Herald-Leader published a picture of the eventing horse Frodo Baggins' crash or the ailing racehorse Eight Belles' demise. Each day, I open any newspaper and see photographs of fatal car accidents and other occurrences that ended someone's life.

"McFilibuster" is at it again, this time supporting pay discrimination against women. By blocking the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, Sen. Mitch McConnell is saying that it is OK with him for corporations to pay our mothers, sisters, wives and daughters less for the same job.

Regarding the editorial in the May 1 Lexington Herald-Leader about the tragedy of a drunk man getting shot trying to enter the wrong house: Just by reading the newspaper every now and then, one can see how many drunks and drug addicts kill people in their homes or other locations. These people should lose their rights to alcohol.

In this new millennium, we are beginning to face a crisis affecting some of the basic necessities of life. Prices at grocery stores have gone up, due to the worldwide shortage of grains. Meanwhile, Americans are suffering from obesity-related health problems that trigger high health-care costs.

On April 29, Herald-Leader columnist Merlene Davis wrote, “Many southern segregationists who were Democrats hopped over the fence to the Republican side, taking their racist views with them and tainting what had been a good relationship” (between blacks and the GOP).
I applaud the April 20 editorial, "Priced out of the running." Higher education makes an important contribution to economic progress through the creation of human capital. For example, in an economic-impact study for Eastern Kentucky University, I calculated that EKU's instructional programs in 2005 added $629 million to the state's stock of human capital.
I contracted polio in 1952 when I was 3. Though I had a good recovery, the nerve damage it caused changed my life forever. Many polio survivors, including me, develop post-polio syndrome 30 to 40 years after the initial infection. PPS involves new muscular weakness and disabling fatigue. Though polio is preventable with a vaccination, there are still children not being vaccinated in this country. New cases occur each year.

The headline on the April 24 Associated Press article "McCain says he opposes bill seeking equal pay for women" is more than biased, it is insulting to the intelligence of all Kentuckians.

I am a student at Eastern Kentucky University and a resident of Perry County. I am very proud that the Herald-Leader takes a positive stand for gay rights.
