KENTUCKY 9, MARSHALL 6
Cats get out of 5-0 hole, raise non-SEC mark to 23-1
CARROLL'S 5 RBI SPARK COMEBACK
HERALD-LEADER STAFF REPORT
Sawyer Carroll's three-run double in the sixth inning was the big blow as Kentucky rallied from a 5-0 deficit to slip past Marshall 9-6 Wednesday at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
The Wildcats are 23-1 against non-conference foes this season.
Their last non-conference loss at home came more than a year ago -- April 18, 2007, to Morehead State. Since then, UK has gone 24-2 at home. The only losses came to Mississippi State and Florida, with the Cats taking two of three in each of those Southeastern Conference series.
The Thundering Herd (23-22-1) jumped on Clint Tilford for five runs in the second.
Nate Lape hit a solo home run. Jeff Rowley and Kenny Socorro each singled in a run. Another scored on a fielder's choice-bunt by Ben Jurevicius. The fifth run came when Lape was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
UK got on the board with two runs in the fifth. Tyler Howe, who singled, scored on Carroll's groundout. Chris Wade, who doubled, came in on Chris Bisson's groundout.
Logan Darnell, Tommy Warner, Scott Green, Brock Baber and Andrew Albers held Marshall to an unearned run the rest of the way.
Bryan Rose, who led off the sixth with a walk, scored on Tyler Howe's bases-loaded groundout. Wade was then hit by a pitch, re-loading the bags for Carroll. His double to left-center tied the game at 6.
The Cats (34-11) took the lead in the seventh.
Chris McClendon and Brian Spear each singled. McClendon scored on a Wade single, and Spear came in on Carroll's sacrifice fly.
UK's final run came in the eighth. Keenan Wiley singled and was eventually singled in by McClendon.
Wade and Howe each had three of UK's 12 hits.
