ALRV: the Aachen-Laurensburger Rennverein, a recreational club founded in 1898 by a group of local horsemen and business people. The club still runs the Aachen World Equestrian Festival, an annual international horse show in Germany. The club was also the organizing committee of the 2006 World Equestrian Games.
CHIO: Concours Hippique International Officiel, one term for the Aachen World Equestrian Festival, the city's annual international horse show. This horse show now features five disciplines: show jumping, dressage, carriage driving, vaulting and eventing. The latter two were added after the World Equestrian Games. The horse show is one of the top equestrian events in the world.
FEI: Fédération Équestre Internationale, also called the International Equestrian Federation. The international governing body of equestrian sport, which oversees all national equestrian federations and decides where the World Equestrian Games should be held.
