How have you found the basketball transition from high school to college? It is different. In high school, you could get away with a lot of stuff. But (in college) you've got to come to play now. Every day. You can't play laid-back and lazy. You've got to come to work.
Did you play lazy in high school? It really depended on the team (the opponent). When I played high-profile players, I came to play. If I was playing against a "rooty-poop," I was going along with the motions.
How often did you go along with the motions? My high school senior year, we played a really tough schedule. I'd say 80 percent of our games were hard.
Your brother will be playing for Tates Creek High this season. What's his name? Jaleel.
How good is he? He's 15. He's 6-8. He's just a smaller mold than me. He has a lot of potential. Since he's gotten here, when I play him one-on-one, he's gotten better already.
Do you win those one-on-one games? Of course.
Why did your mother, brother and sister move to Lexington from Mobile, Ala.? Just to be here and support me. Move to a better place, a better environment. ... It's just an opportunity to better ourselves.
Coach Calipari is most noted for developing point guards. What led you, as a big man, to follow him from Memphis to Kentucky? Coach Cal is just like me. He's real cut and dry. It's not about him. It's about the players. He's trying not to be a coach who holds you back or makes you stay around three or four years. If you have the ability to go one-and-done, he's going to help you. He's going to push you. Other coaches keep you three or four years just to let them have a good name or keep their program rolling. When Cal was recruiting me, it was not about me being a great player or "you'll touch the ball every time." He told me the truth: If you work, you'll play. I like that about him.
How are you like Cal in terms of being cut and dry? You tell the truth. No sugarcoating.
