How do you feel about fan expectations of you leading Kentucky to great things? It's not going to be on what I'm going to do. I'm really focusing on, as a leader, getting my teammates involved, getting them going first and worrying about myself later.
What are Coach Cal's expectations for you and the team? Everybody is expecting so much out of us. He says, get the chemistry down, learn the offense, play as a team. With Patrick Patterson back, that gives a big help. He can be a big leader for us. We want to give him a chance to play in the NCAA Tournament.
How closely do you identify with Derrick Rose and Tyreke Evans, two highly regarded freshman point guards who excelled for Coach Cal at Memphis? The things he did for Derrick Rose and Tyreke Evans fit in perfectly. I think I can do the same things they did.
How so? The way Coach Cal taught them and prepared them to get ready for the NBA. I kind of just play like them. The dribble-drive, get to the basket, play one-on-one.
How careful are you to not suggest Kentucky basketball will be the John Wall show this season? That's the one thing I'm kind of worried about. Since I've been here for the summer and playing with these guys, and they're happy I'm here, and I'm happy to be here with them. ... The upperclassmen showed me a lot of respect, and I'm showing them respect. Our main thing is making sacrifices for this team.
You were a star on the high school level, but can you excel as a college player? I feel I can do the same stuff I did in high school. But it's not going to be easy. These people, they watch film of you a lot. They study the game. In high school, they put three defenders on you and leave it like that. It's not like high school. (College defenses) key on you, so you need your teammates to back you up.
How much did you hear from fans who saw the video of your dunk on Jerry Stackhouse? A whole lot. If he were younger, he probably would have blocked it.
