FROM THE ARCHIVES: Editorial: On the air (March 9, 1988)

This editorial was published originally on Wednesday, March 9, 1988, on Page A14 of the Herald-Leader.

Radio Free Lexington deserves hearty congratulations from everyone — and not just for introducing us to Megadeth and Bambi Slam.

WRFL-FM, a non-commercial radio station at the University of Kentucky, went on the air Monday afternoon for the first time. Its music may receive mixed reviews. (To some, it sounds like nothing so much as the ritual sacrifice of a goat at a truck pull.) But the students who conceived the station should be applauded for completing a difficult and discouraging project.

A student suggested the idea in October 1985 in a student newspaper column. Proponents were disappointed frequently as they tackled FCC red tape and financial and logistical problems.

They were jubilant when they finally went on the air — as they should be. Welcome, and good luck.
