African American students entering their junior or senior years in high school are invited to attend a summer conference meant to prepare them for college life.
The 21st annual Academically Proficient African American High School Junior Senior Conference will be held June 13-14 at Murray State University. The conference was announced this week by sponsors, the Council on Postsecondary Education and the Kentucky Department of Education.
The conference will include information about college opportunities across Kentucky and the country, selecting a college, picking a career, finding financial aid and adjusting to college life.
The keynote speaker will be Patricia Kusimo, chief executive officer of West Virginia Center for Development. She has more than 25 years of education experience and is one of the founders of Maximizing the Achievement of African American Children in Kanawha (MAACK). Kanawha is in West Virginia.
Ben Glenn, president of Chalkguy Media International, will make a presentation during lunch. Glenn is a public speaker and author who does live art demonstrations.
The conference will also include sessions for students and parents about scholarships, career selection and developing coping and communication skills.
The event will conclude with a career fair with representatives from various colleges and universities.
