Police identify man killed Thursday in coal truck crash

HAZARD -- Kentucky State Police have identified the man killed in a crash involving a coal truck in Perry County Thursday evening.

Carl E. Powell, 35, of Hazard was pronounced dead at the Hazard Appalachian Regional Healthcare Center after the crash.

Police say the accident occurred about 4:30 p.m. when Katherine Jones lost control of her car on Ky. 15 in Grapevine, about five miles north of Hazard. The car crossed the center lane into oncoming traffic and crashed into a coal truck driven by Reed Brewer of Brewer’s Trucking.

Powell was a passenger in the car. He was not wearing a seatbelt, state police said.

Jones, the driver of the car, received injuries and underwent surgery. Her condition is not known. The driver of the coal truck was not seriously injured.

Police continue to investigate the accident and factors that may have caused the crash. Toxicology results are pending on the drivers.
