Discount pool passes to disadvantaged kids

- bmusgrave@herald-leader.com

A Lexington auto dealer wants to make sure all kids have the chance to beat the heat this summer.

The Quantrell Autogroup — which sells Cadillac, Saturn, Volvo and Saab cars — recently donated $5,000 to cover pool passes for low-income kids 15 and under at Lexington Fayette Urban County government pools. Kids who are on free or reduced lunch qualify for a 50-percent-off pool pass. The Quantrell money will pay for the remaining 50 percent. A day pass at most area pools costs $3 for kids. A pass for the season costs $50.

Lexington Mayor Jim Newberry said that if any money remains at the end of the pool season, the money will be used next year. Most of the city's nine pools will close Aug. 13. Woodland and Shillito pools will remain open until Labor Day.

Parents who want to participate in the program should call Partners for Youth, a nonprofit dedicated to helping disadvantaged kids, at 258-3119.
