Flooding reported in Powell and Estill

- slannen@herald-leader.com

Some streets and roads are closed in Powell and Estill counties because of flooding.

The Red River near Clay City and Stanton was at 17.05 feet at 9 a.m. It was not expected to crest until 1 or 2 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

A flood warning will remain in effect for Powell County until 7:15 p.m. Pompeii Road was closed, as well as Bowen, Maple, Adams Ridge and Rosslyn streets.

The Kentucky River near Ravenna in Estill County was at 22.17 feet, just over flood stage. The river was cresting and was expected to recede, but it was not expected to go below flood stage until midnight, said Brian Schoettmer, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson.

The Cumberland River at Williamsburg also was near flood stage but was not expected to flood.

A flood warning was in effect for Stoner Creek in Paris on Wednesday night.
