Male's second quarter dusts Madison Central

Highlands Routs Ashland Blazer

The second quarter was all Male needed to put away Madison Central Friday night.

The 22nd-rated Bulldogs scored 27 points in the second quarter and coasted through the rest of the game to beat No. 13 Madison Central 41-14 in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs in Louisville.

The higher-rated Indians punted on each of their first five possessions until running out of time on their sixth, which ended at the Male 28 with the first-half horn.

Male, on the other hand, scored touchdowns on five consecutive possessions after punting the ball on their first.

The tally at halftime: Male 34, Madison Central 0.

The 24-minute drought was too much for the Indians to overcome.

Madison Central lost 14 yards on its first five possessions and didn't get a first down until less than three minutes remaining in the second quarter.

Justin Green and Dexter Britt led the way for the Bulldogs.

Green had two touchdown runs within three minutes of each other to give Male a 14-0 lead and Britt ran for a touchdown and threw for another in the last five minutes of the half.

Madison Central would get as close as 34-14 with second-half touchdown runs from Keshawn Simpson and Isaiah Kavanaugh, but a late touchdown pass from Tyler Langdon to Tony Branch set the final score for the Bulldogs.

Male, which is rated No. 11 in Class 6A, will face Scott County in the third round.

Madison Central ends its season with a 9-3 record.

Class 5A

Highlands 53, Ashland Blazer 6: Senior quarterback Tony Guidugli threw for 254 yards and the host Bluebirds continued their march toward another Class 5A title with a rout of the Tomcats.

Guidugli completed 15 of 22 passes for three touchdowns and added a 15-yard scoring run. Guidugli was 12-for-18 for 213 yards and threw all three of his TDs in the first half, when Highlands jumped out to a 34-6 advantage.

Junior wide receiver Austin Collinsworth caught five passes for 102 yards and a touchdown.

Highlands, the top-rated team in Class 5A and the No. 3 team in the state, will face Johnson Central, which is No. 14 in the state, in the third round.

Johnson Central 49, Covington Catholic 14: The host Golden Eagles built up a 30-0 lead by halftime and added 19 more unanswered points in the third quarter to easily advance past the Colonels and into the third round.

Senior running back Chase Richardson ran 22 times for 227 yards and three touchdowns to lead a Johnson Central offense that had 589 total rushing yards. Junior running back Nathan Dillon added 111 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries.

Class 4A

Lexington Catholic 52, Harrison County 13: Once the Knights finally found the end zone toward the end of the first quarter, they made a habit of going there.

Catholic overcame an early 7-0 deficit by scoring 45 unanswered points to blow past the host Thorobreds.

Greg Raglin's 8-yard TD run with 49 seconds left in the first quarter tied the game at 7-all and set off the Knights' offensive onslaught.

Raglin ran 14 times for 136 yards and three touchdowns in all. His output helped Catholic outgain Harrison County 379-211.

Patrick Hager added 121 yards on seven carries — which included a 79-yard scoring run — for the Knights. Nic Ward completed 10 of 19 passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns.

The Catholic defense forced five turnovers and held Harrison County to 19 passing yards.

The Knights, rated No. 3 in Class 4A and No. 6 in the state, will play No. 4 Boyle County, the top-rated team in the class, in the third round.

Bell County 49, Rockcastle County 7: Senior quarterback Shawnta Zachery threw three touchdowns and broke the school's single-season record for touchdown passes in the host Bobcats' rout of Rockcastle County.

Zachery was 6-for-14 passing for 136 yards and the three scores helped him break the school's record with 21 touchdown passes for the season.

Senior halfback Spencer Greer ran 17 times for 118 yards, including a 50-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Bell County, rated No. 2 in Class 4A and No. 6 in the state, will play Knox Central in next week's third round.

Class 3A

Breathitt County 62, Harlan County 34: The host Bobcats overcame a halftime deficit to stave off what would have been a big upset at the hands of Harlan County.

Breathitt County trailed 28-21 at halftime before outscoring the Black Bears 26-6 in the third quarter and 15-0 in the fourth.

Junior running back Channing Fugate was the star for Breathitt County. He ran 23 times for 374 yards and five touchdowns. Fugate also had two runs for two-point conversions. The Bobcats gained 574 rushing yards and 767 yards of total offense.

Breathitt County, rated No. 4 in Class 3A, will face Estill County in the next round.

Class 2A

Newport Central Catholic 42, Lloyd Memorial 15: Two brothers both topped 100 yards and the host Thoroughbreds let Lloyd Memorial hang around early before putting the game away in the fourth quarter.

Senior running back Mark Kelly ran 25 times for 173 yards and a touchdown to lead a NewCath rushing attack that amassed 373 yards. Kelly's younger brother, Chris, took seven attempts for 103 yards and a score. Senior quarterback Rob Kues also ran for two touchdowns.

The heavily favored Thoroughbreds led 21-9 before scoring three touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

NewCath, rated No. 1 in Class 2A, will face DeSales in the third round.

DeSales 23, Covington Holy Cross 16 (OT): Kyle Perry ran for a touchdown in the first quarter and an even bigger one in overtime to send the host Colts to a victory over Holy Cross.

Ryan Johnson's 30-yard run with 2:58 left in the fourth quarter tied the game at 16-all and forced the overtime.

In that period, Perry ran one in from three yards out and the DeSales defense stopped Holy Cross on fourth down to claim the victory.

Class A

Lexington Christian 69, Williamsburg 48: Domonique Hayden ran for 209 yards and the visiting Eagles got past Williamsburg and into the third round of the playoffs.

Hayden ran 21 times and scored three touchdowns to go with two catches for 17 yards.

Lucas Witt completed nine of 15 passes for 126 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. He also ran five times for 72 yards and a touchdown.

Williamsburg scored first but Hayden made it 7-6 with a 56-yard touchdown run four minutes into the first quarter. LCA opened a 41-24 lead by halftime.

LCA, rated No. 2 in Class A, faces No. 4-rated Raceland in the next round.
