TE from Georgia commits to UK

Kentucky landed its 27th commitment for the Class of 2009 on Saturday when Terrell Mitchell of Powder Springs, Ga., announced his decision.

Mitchell, a 6-foot-6, 225-pound tight end, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he gave up on a hoped-for call from Georgia and chose the Cats over his other finalist, Michigan.

"I haven't talked to (Georgia) in a long time ... three weeks or more," Mitchell told the AJC. "They haven't even attempted to call. I guess I'll see Georgia next when we (Kentucky) play Georgia."

The Miami Hurricanes expressed late interest in Mitchell and offered him the chance to make an official visit this weekend, but Mitchell declined the opportunity.

"They didn't offer me, but I didn't want to play in the ACC. I think the SEC is the best football conference," Mitchell told the Journal-Constitution. "Kentucky has been with me since the start. I liked Kentucky and Michigan about the same. But Kentucky is in the South, closer to home. My family will get to come to a lot of my games. I don't think they'd go all the way to Michigan to see me as much."

Mitchell, from McEachern High School in Powder Springs, is rated a three-star recruit by Rivals.com and Scout.com. Scout rates him as the No. 24 tight end in the nation. Rivals has him at No. 35.

He is the third tight end in UK's 2009 class, joining Jordan Aumiller of Boyle County and Anthony Kendrick of Katy, Texas.
