Kentucky’s women’s soccer team shut out one of the highest scoring teams in the country, defeating visiting No. 13 Louisiana State 1-0 on Friday night.
The Wildcats (4-6-3, 1-4-0 SEC) got the only goal of the game from Giuleana Lopez, who scored with 1:26 left in the first half. It was Lopez’s third goal of the season.
The Tigers’ offense, which had averaged four goals per game in conference play, were shut down by UK goalie Sydney Hiance.
Volleyball: Kentucky volleyball coach Craig Skinner got the 100th victory of his career when his Wildcats swept Auburn 25-18, 25-20, 25-11 on Friday night. The 10th-ranked Wildcats (16-1, 6-0 SEC) were led by juniors Sarah Mendoza and Lauren Rapp, who had 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Senior setter Sarah Rumely had 42 assists.
Rifle: Led by a match-high 589 in air rifle from senior Ashley Jackson, Kentucky’s rifle team opened the season with a 4,626-4,525 win over N.C. State on Friday afternoon at UK’s Barker Hall.
Tennis: Kentucky sophomore Eric Quigley swept the final five games of his match against No. 27 Jordan Rux of Baylor to win 6-3, 7-5 in the second round Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. Quigley, 8-1 this fall, will play No. 9 Sanam Singh of Virginia in the round of 16 Saturday. Earlier in the day, Quigley and doubles partner Brad Cox won their second-round match to advance to the quarterfinals. The No. 24 Wildcats dominated Boston College’s Erik Kreutzer and Thomas Nolan 8-1.
■ Sophomore Caroline Lilley defeated Louisville’s Sarah Miller 6-2, 6-3 in the first round of the UK Invitational at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex on Friday. Lilley and doubles partner Minnette Pienaar defeated Louisville’s Mandy Brown and Miller 9-8 (4), but lost later 9-8 (5) to Penn State’s Petra Januskova and Lauren McCarthy. Pienaar lost her first-round singles match 6-0, 1-6, 6-4 to Abilene Christian’s Jaclyn Walker.
Swimming, diving: Kentucky’s swimming and diving teams split their season-opener at South Carolina. The women won 168-130; the men lost 160-140.
