Lexington beautillion celebrates excellence for young black men

On Saturday night Lexington Center was the scene for a beautillion, a rite-of-passage celebration in which 39 young black men or “beaus” were introduced to the community. The event was the fourth organized by Black Males Working or BMW, a privately funded program that promotes excellence in African-American youths. Beautillions are more common in the South, but more are popping up across the country to counter negative images of black youths trapped in unemployment, violence and unintended fatherhood.
