The secret style of pets

With so many of us being pet owners and animal lovers I don’t think we realize how big of an influence these beautiful creatures have in our lives, specifically our style. Dog moms, cat ladies, bird lovers...you name it and there is some kind of fashionable merchandise. For our issue dedicated to furry and feathery friends we’re focusing on some of our current favorite items that pay tribute to animals. When it comes to clothing there’s no better way to express your personality than to go for looks that showcase who you are as a person. A dog print dress is perfect for the gal who loves her pups, while a pair of leopard print sneakers are sure to make any cat lady purr with excitement. Since summer is in full swing there is even a variety of animal themed, warm weather products that you won’t want to pass up. Who wouldn’t want to lounge in the pool on a giant golden, inflatable swan? Made popular a few years ago by the ultimate party hostess Taylor Swift, these floats are all the rage. If you’re on the hunt for a cute, fun in the sun dress, flamingos are always a great option. Their pink, girly appeal is a feminine and fabulous way to stay cool while standing out in the crowd.

Bridal bliss

Since this is our Cherish issue, it only seems fitting to focus on bridal season. Whether you’re the bride to be, a member of the wedding party, or simply an attendee, choosing the right thing to wear or what to give as a gift can get a little stressful. With rehearsal dinners, showers, and even the honeymoon, you want to go after dresses that are stylish, but also not so fancy that you are uncomfortable in them. Choosing designs that flow or have a less fitted silhouette are perfect for spring and summer weddings. To accompany a heat preventing airy fit, we also like colors that are soft and in the bridal family. Cool tone blues, soft pinks, and lovely lavenders are all classic choices, and unless you are the bride, try to steer clear of all white looks.

Petal power

“Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.” Miranda Priestley said it best in ‘The Devil Wears Prada’, but as cliché as it might be, florals have always been and remain one of the greatest inspirations for spring fashion and beauty trends. Their colors, their textures, their scent all work together to inspire our wardrobe choices and beauty looks.

Dealing with belligerent kids

Parents know all too well that kids are experts at pushing our buttons – talking back, refusing to mind, picking fights with their siblings – at precisely those moments when we’re at our most stressed.

Girls just wanna have fun

Since this issue is all about getting saucy, we are here to help you spice up your wardrobe for a girl's night out. Going out for an evening with the gals can be as low-key or as dressy as you want, but we think it's always a good idea to have a little fun with it. Since a group of women's styles can vary from all degrees of glam to casual, it's nice to have options for every kind of outing. If your plans are for more of a relaxed get together, a cool graphic tee, cute pair of flats, and a lip gloss with a slight hint of sparkle are all excellent choices. If you're going for a theme, we love a good 90's throw back. Items like an updated bodysuit, an edgy leather moto jacket, and a simple black choker scream Kelly Taylor (hey there 90210 fans!). Or if you want more of a modern-day fashionista look, channel your inner Carrie Bradshaw with an ultra-feminine tulle skirt. To make a bit of a bolder statement, a silk fuchsia duster is a vibrant way to jazz up some jeans. Link up your pop of pink with a beautiful Burgundy hued eyeshadow palette for an ultimate punch of color. If taking the girls dancing, a sparkly pair of sequin pants are a glitzy way to catch the light. A one shouldered jumpsuit also screams “Ladies Night”, as does a little black dress complete with fringe detailing.

Jarrett's Joy Cart

Jennifer Mynear knew her son Jarrett was special from a young age. Though she had always known he was smart, she first saw his rare fearlessness at age 2. After he was diagnosed with an aggressive bone cancer at age 2, she and her husband Doug took him to an orthopedic surgeon to discuss amputating his lower right leg.

Comic relief

For LaRonda Clay, the hardest part about comedy was getting up the nerve to do it in the first place. She had waffled about doing amateur night at Comedy Off Broadway for months, but in March 2010, she finally found the courage to get up on stage. Her husband Phillip encouraged her and helped her to have the confidence to pull it off.

Spreading joy this holiday season

As holiday time rolls around, kids invariably start to think about their gift wish lists. And while there’s no denying the joy of ripping into a freshly wrapped present on Christmas morning, the season is also about giving — and the joy that brings as well.

Glitter all the way

The Christmas holiday season is always filled with joy and merriment, and that should be reflected in what you wear. With parties, dinners and events going in full swing, there is no better time to dress up and look your best. Our favorite element of the holidays is without question, the sparkle of it all. While many of us don’t mind getting our twinkle on any old time, a lot of women like to reserve those shining moments for special occasions. Wearing anything glittery can be a bit intimidating, especially if it’s not something you are used to. We have chosen a wide variety of holiday party pieces — from subtle to full on dazzle to help with all of your getting ready needs.

My Story: Cancer does not define the survivor

In 2011 at just 34 years old, I was told I had breast cancer. I felt a lump while I was breastfeeding and my ob/gyn told me that I had “lumpy” breast due to breastfeeding. I was not comfortable with this statement, so I went ahead and sought the advice of another ob/gyn. This time I was sent for diagnostic testing. Even then, the radiologist said “Young women have dense breasts so it’s probably nothing.” I did not feel comfortable with that diagnosis. I took the radiologist’s hand and laid it on the lump that I was feeling and told her, “This is the lump I have been feeling for six months.” After two biopsies, doctors confirmed that I had ductal carcinoma in-situ.
