Derby weekend, Keeneland style
Skip the Louisville traffic and head to Keeneland to celebrate Derby weekend. For the Kentucky Oaks on Friday, gates open at 9 a.m., first post at Churchill Downs is 10:30 a.m. The day includes wagering, live music in the paddock and food vendors. General admission and parking are free.
For Derby Day on Saturday, more than 1,000 televisions mean you won't miss a minute of action. Concessions and bars will be open throughout the Grandstand, and the day will include live music and children's activities. Gates open at 9 a.m., and admission is $5, free for ages 12 and younger. Kentucky's Poet Laureate George Ella Lyon, above, and other writers present Poetry in the Greenhouses, 5:30 p.m. Friday at Michler's, 417 East Maxwell Street. In addition to Lyon, the evening of poetry among the flora will feature readings by Steven Alvarez, Dan Howell, Julia Johnson, Leatha Kendrick, Iris Law, Maurice Manning, Christopher McCurry, John Michler, Kimberly Miller, Gurney Norman, Katerina Stoykova-Klemer, Kasia Pater, Mary Ann Taylor-Hall, Richard Taylor and Jeff Worley.
